The Creative Process Behind Linus Hui’s Paper Sea Turtle for Pacsafe

In celebration of Pacsafe Ocean Month this June, we’ve partnered with Hong Kong-based Paper Artist, Linus Hui, to create a stunning paper sea turtle. Linus, who is known for his intricate paper art, helped us bring our own paper sea turtle to life.

Linus’s interest in paper art began when he used it as part of his costume for a series of self-portraits. He was fascinated by the malleability and structure of the material and decided to explore more with it. His creative process involves researching the subject matter, sketching shapes, and reducing them to small chunks of polygons that are still effective in making the subject recognizable.

As a Paper Artist, Linus faces unique challenges, especially when it comes to keeping his artwork “alive” in Hong Kong’s humid climate. He has to store his artwork carefully and “bring them out to breathe” once in a while. However, he makes sure to incorporate sustainability and eco-friendliness into his paper art creations by using up the whole paper to reduce wastage and exploring ways to turn scraps into something more usable.

Linus has worked on many interesting paper art projects, including his self-portraits, where he uses paper as an extension of himself physically and mentally. For the paper sea turtle he created for us, Linus researched the most recognizable shapes for sea turtles and which species would stand out the most. He adopted a simple and easily recognizable design that could be assembled relatively easily and with minimal adhesive.
