“If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you totravel – as far and as widely as possible.” Anthony Bordain.
Are you under twenty-five? You’re in yourtravelling prime! Now is the time for intrepidtravel, fulfill your wildesttravelling fantasies, and have atravel experience of a lifetime.
Explore. Dream. Discover.
What are you waiting for?
There will likely come a time when you will want to trade your backpack for a wheeled suitcase. But for now the time is ripe to carry your worldly possessions on your back, jump on a plane, train or boat and go see the world.
You’re young, you’re fit, you’re healthy – and you don’t have children trailing in your wake. The world’s best multi-day treks are open for your carefree enjoyment. Hike the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, trek the Everest trail to base camp, or embark on Patagonia’s Torres del Paine circuit.
Not everybody has the inclination (or funds) to climb Everest, but there are whole ranges of other mountains out there accessible to most mortals of a relatively fit disposition. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo, Mount Fuji in Japan and Jebel Toukbal in Morocco are all popular choices.
Our sense of mortality grows as we age – so do all these things while you’re still young and reckless. Bungee jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge, paraglide over Queenstown in New Zealand, cage dive with great white sharks in South Africa, whitewater raft through the Grand Canyon or jump out of a plane over the Swiss Alps in Interlaken.
Trekking through the rainforest is hot, sweaty work so perfect for the young and able-bodied. Cross the canopy walkways of Borneo, fish for piranhas in the Amazon, track jaguar in Costa Rica or visit the gorillas in Rwanda. All unforgettable experiences.
The best way to get to know a country is to escape your fellow travellers and interact with the locals. You don’t need to spend a year teaching English in rural China – consider staying in a longhouse in Borneo, visiting the hill tribe villages of northern Vietnam, or simply talk about football with the locals in a bar in South America.
Travelling a country by train not only provides panoramic views of the local scenery, it is also a great way to slow down a little and get to know the locals. Pick up your backpack and interrail across Europe, journey through the tea plantations of Sri Lanka, take the Reunification Express from Hanoi to Saigon, or experience the changing landscape of the epic Trans Siberian Express.
Because that’s what 20-somethings do, right? Hit up a full moon party in Koh Phangan, collect beads at Mardi Gras in New Orleans, dance the night away at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, or sink some beers at Munich’s Oktoberfest. Fun!
